Roderick worked in editing and managerial roles at Angus & Robertson between 1945-1965 and was the Foundation Professor of English at James Cook University, North Queensland; visiting Professor at European Universities (1973, 1975 and 1977; and a judge of the Miles Franklin award (1957-1991).
