Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers Jazz Legends - Live at the Village Vanguard Club, New York, 1992

In the particular case of Art Blakey, the name "jazz legend" is wholly appropriate. Born in 1919, Blakey served his musical apprenticeship in the bands of Billy Eckstine and Dizzy Gillespie, with whom his reputation as a drummer grew. From their inception in 1955 until Blakey's death in 1990, the Jazz Messengers were pivotal in nurturing not only the hard-edged bebop sound but also the jazz greats of the future, including Lee Morgan, Benny Golsen, Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, Donald Byrd, Johnny Griffin, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, and Branford Marsalis, to name just a few. This unique 1982 performance of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers also includes a set by Johnny Griffin.
