The sources of economic growth in OECD countries

Understand growth disparities between OECD countries over the past twenty years through identification and analysis of underlying factors. Growth patterns through the 1990s and into this decade have turned received wisdom on its head. For most of the post-war period, OECD countries with relatively low GDP per capita grew faster than richer countries. Since the late 1990s, however, that pattern has broken down with the United States notably drawing further ahead of the field. This publication provides a comprehensive overview of growth drivers across the OECD and the extent to which disparities are attributable to factors like new technology and R&D, macroeconomic policy, education and training, labour market flexibility, product market competition, and barriers to business start-up and closure.

  • "This work presents an in-depth reflection on the sources of ecomic growth. What drove economic growth in the OECD countries? What effects have developments, such as globalization and international terrorism, had on the determinants of growth? How, and how much, does government activity contribute to long-term growth? What policies should therefore be advocated? And, finally, what lesson do practices in individual countries have for others?; The volume addresses issues with the help of a newly developed set of policy and regulation indicators for different markets. It uses these indicators to disentangle the effects of the various factors, then examines how each factor affects specific sectors of the economy. Different tools are used to exploit this information and assess the sources of economic growth. They range from growth-accounting methods - which divide growth into contributions from various factors of production at the aggregate and sectoral levels - to regression analyses at the macro, industry and micro levels - which attempt to identify causal links between growth and policy-relevant factors. Drawing from these complementary analyses, the book provides a consistent view of the growth process."
