During this war, he became known and respected as a tactician, planner, strategist, and diplomat, and began his rapid ascent through Army ranks, ending his career with a six-year stint as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR). The first step was his behind-the-scenes involvement with the formation of NATO in 1948-1949 and his work as a founding father of the Mutual Defense Assistance Plan (1949-1950).
