"The events of this story took place in Iceland in the eleventh century A.D The Vikings who had settled there were being converted to Christianity but they still took part in ferocious blood feuds. Through their friendship with their neighbours Gunnar, Njal and his sons were involved in several quarrels. Each time Njal found a peaceful solution, until finally Gunnar went against his advice and met his death at at the hands of his enemies. The destruction of Njal's family in their attempt to avenge him, and the long revenge sought by Njal's son-in-law, mark the climax of the book."
