Upstairs, downstairs (Television program : 1971-1975). Series 1

Most of the cast from the first season were happy to return but Simon Williams was starring in a stage play in the West End and was unable to appear in more than two episodes. The series ends on a wonderfully enigmatic note with the younger members of the household standing on the balcony listening to the murmur of thousands of voices drifting across from the crowds outside Buckingham Palace who have gathered because of the death of King Edward.

  • "One of the most loved television series of all time is brought back to life with a fresh cast and sumptuous production values. It's 1936, and six years since parlor maid Rose left 165 Eaton Place, when fate brings her back as housekeeper to its new owners: Sir Hallam, his wife Lady Agnes, and Maud, Lady Holland, his mother. Rose soon finds she has her work cut out as she recruits a new 'downstairs' family to help run the elegance and finery of the 'upstairs' world."@en
  • "The contrasting lives of an aristocratic family and their house servants."@en
  • "Disc one contains episodes 1-3 of the classic series about the wealthy Bellamys and their lively servants."@en
  • "The 55 episode series spans more than 3 decades of the twentieth century from the late Victorian period to the thirties. It dramatises the curious mixture of the aristocratic and the haute bourgeois lying at the heart of the British class system. The lives of the household servants below the stairs are given as much emphasis as those of the Bellamy family above. The servants are as hierarchical in their way as their masters. Historical events are refracted through fictional lives. The appeal of the series clearly lay in its accomplished play on nostalgia for more settled times when Britain was at its zenith of imperial and bourgeois power and on the comcomitant sense of loss in the years of postwar decline. The 8 episodes in this package span the decade prior to World War I."@en
  • "In this collection Sarah (Pauline Collins) joins the household of Eaton Place as under-parlour maid and the changes of the early 20th century affect the household."@en
  • "The lives of both the family and the servants in the London townhouse at 165 Eaton Place are followed. Upstairs lives Richard Bellamy, the head of the household, and also a member of Parliament. His wife is a member of the titled aristocracy. Downstairs is Hudson, the Scottish butler who directs and guides the other servants concerning their tasks and proper places."@en
