Uprooted : how Breslau became Wroclaw during the century of expulsions

With the stroke of a pen at the Potsdam Conference following the Allied victory in 1945, Breslau, the largest German city east of Berlin, became the Polish city of Wroclaw. Its more than six hundred thousand inhabitants--almost all of them ethnic Germans--were expelled and replaced by Polish settlers from all parts of prewar Poland. Uprooted examines the long-term psychological and cultural consequences of forced migration in twentieth-century Europe through the experiences of Wroclaw's Polish inhabitants. In this pioneering work, Gregor Thum tells the story of how the city's new Polish settle.

Die Deutschen wurden aus Breslau vertrieben und durch Polen ersetzt, von denen viele ihrerseits Vertriebene aus dem an die Sowjetunion gefallenen Ostpolen waren. Für die meisten Ansiedler blieb Breslau lange eine fremde Stadt, die, so die verbreitete Furcht, früher oder später wieder an die Deutschen fallen würde. Noch bis in die fünfziger Jahre war die beim Kampf um die "Festung" Breslau in den letzten Kriegsmonaten zerstörte Stadt eine Trümmerwüste. Doch im diplomatischen Ringen um die Oder-Neisse-Grenze war Breslau von so herausragender politischer Bedeutung, dass der polnische Staat und seine Gesellschaft in gemeinsamer Anstrengung darangingen, Breslau wieder aufzubauen und zu einer glänzenden Metropole zu machen. Der Autor schildert, wie sich der Bruch von 1945 aus der Perspektive Breslaus ausnahm, wie man aus einer deutschen eine polnische Stadt zu machen versuchte und wie sich dies im Stadtbild niedergeschlagen hat. Breslaus deutsche Geschichte wurde lange verdrängt und ihre Spuren beseitigt. Heute jedoch wird sie von den polnischen Breslauern als Teil einer besonderen lokalen Identität wahrgenommen. Breslau erfindet sich noch einmal neu."
