"Ruba lebt mit ihren Eltern, ihrem Bruder und ihrer Grossmutter in einem Dorf in der Nähe von Beirut. Der Krieg ist für die Kinder Alltag, und oft scheint die Faszination gegenüber Soldaten und Waffen grösser als die Furcht vor ihnen zu sein. Doch weit schlimmer als die politische Situation ist für Ruba die Lethargie, in die ihr Vater gefallen ist. Der früher so lebensfrohe Mann zieht sich seit einiger Zeit tagelang in seinen Sessel zurück und stiert vor sich hin; seine Kinder nimmt er nicht mehr wahr. Die zehnjährige Ruba sucht die Schuld für sein Verhalten bei der <<Hexe>> des Dorfes, die ihn mit einem Fluch belegt haben soll. Die Situation spitzt sich immer mehr zu: Die Bomben rücken näher an Rubas Haus, ihr grosser Bruder wird angeschossen, die hellseherische Grossmutter träumt vom Tod und der allerseits geliebte Onkel verdient mit zwielichtigen Geschäften sein Lebensunterhalt. Endlich kommt Ruba dem Geheimnis ihres Vaters auf den Grund: Er fühlt sich verantwortlich für den Tod eines kleinen Mädchens. Erst als er das Leben eines anderen Mädchens retten kann, erwacht er wieder aus der Starre. In der Zwischenzeit lernt Ruba die <<Hexe>> kennen und merkt, dass sie mit deren Familie eng verbunden ist. Das junge libanesische Autorin legt ein bemerkenswertes Zeugnis davon ab, wie Kinder Krieg erleben und sehen.
