F W Boreham the public theologian : the interplay of faith and life in the newspaper editorials of F W Boreham 1912-1959

While F W Boreham (1871-1959) became internationally known through his fifty books of sermons and essays, this thesis studies the 3,000 newspaper editorials that he wrote for the Hobart Mercury and the Melbourne Age between 1912 and 1959. His life story, which began in England, developed in New Zealand and concluded in Australia, is sketched to provide the context that shaped Boreham's editorial writing. The calls for a 'public theology' are explored. The second part of the thesis examines Borham's editorial style. The third part addressed four major themes: 'Realizing full expression', 'Reverence for nature', 'The forward thrust of history' and 'Vision for the ordinary". The unifying theme is stated as 'All the blessings of life'. The final part evaluates Boreham's editorial writing and critiques the interplay of theology with his literary themes.--Abstract, l. viii.
