On May 16, 2003, fourteen suicide bombers launched a series of attacks throughout Casablanca. It was the deadliest attack in Morocco's history. The bombers came from the shantytowns of Sidi Moumen, a poor suburb on the edge of a dump whose impoverished residents rarely if ever set foot in the cosmopolitan city at their doorstep. Mahi Binebine's novel Horses of God follows four childhood friends growing up in Sidi Moumen as they make the life-changing decisions that will lead them to become Islamist martyrs. The seeds of fundamentalist martyrdom are sown in the dirt-poor live.

  • "En ce début d'année 2010 il est de ces romans qui ne passent pas inaperçus. 'Les étoiles de Sidi Moumen,' paru le 6 janvier, fait partie de ceux-là. Mahi Binebine, artiste peintre, sculpteur et romancier s'essaie à travers cet ouvrage à un exercice inédit. La narration en " je" permets en effet, de retranscrire au mieux le quotidien dans le bidonville de Sidi Moumen tel qu'il est perçu par Yachine, dont l'histoire nous est contée. "Les étoiles" ce sont tous ces jeunes garçons qui composent l'équipe de foot du quartier et qui ont en commun d'être nés dans ce quartier délaissé de Casablanca. Lorsque l'avenir n'offre aucune perspective, comment ne pas se laisser séduire par les sirènes des prêcheurs qui offrent la perspective d'une 'vie de béatitude et d'un paradis infini ? La réponse à cette question est donnée par Yachine lui-même : 'En vivant à Sidi Moumen, cernés de macchabés, d'éclopés et de rampants, nous étions en réalité presque morts. A aucun moment cependant Mahi Binebine ne justifie l'inexcusable. Comme il l'a lui-même déclaré, son livre est une fiction qui s'inspire du drame.' Les récits de vie qui nous y sont livrés ont tous été imaginés après une longue observation de la (sur)vie quotidienne à Sidi Moumen. Les attentats de mai 2003 à Casablanca ont été un électrochoc pour tous les habitants du Royaume. Six ans plus tard Les étoiles de Sidi Moumen met en lumière le désespoir que peuvent éprouver les laissés-pour-compte pour qui 'L'espoir n'existe pas.' Le danger est là : le terreau du terrorisme est l'absence d'expectative de lendemains meilleurs, dès lors tous les possibles sont réalisables même au détriment de sa propre vie. Malgré les apparences, l'histoire se révèle également souvent drôle et toujours émouvante et a ainsi le mérite de ne jamais sombrer dans le pathos."

The barefoot boys started their own football team-the Stars of Sidi Moumen. They played amongst the rocks, detritus, and buried skeletons of the dump but they dreamed of becoming the best football players of all time.
