  • "In this revisionist romp, Faber reimagines the mortal who stole fire from the gods as Canadian linguist Theo Griepenkerl, who makes an amazing discovery when he's sent to Iraq to help preserve war-threatened historical artifacts. When a bomb destroys a museum, nine dusty scrolls are discovered in a sculpture. They are quickly recognized by Theo (who, of course, reads Aramaic) as a "gospel" written by Malchus, servant to high priest Caiaphas and an eyewitness observer of Christ's crucifixion."
  • "Theo Griepenkerl, a callow and charmless scholar of Aramaic, is scouring Iraq for ancient artefacts to take to Canada for safekeeping when a bomb hits the museum he happens to be casing. Lucky for him, not only is an obstructive curator blown to pieces but so is a bas relief goddess whose hollow belly reveals nine scrolls. These are the gospel of Malchus, a garrulous forgotten disciple and eyewitness to the crucifixion."
  • "Theo Griepenkerl, a Canadian linguistics scholar, is sent to Iraq in search of artifacts that have survived the destruction and looting of the war. While visiting a museum in Mosul, he finds nine papyrus scrolls tucked in the belly of a basrelief sculpture: they have been perfectly preserved for more than two thousand years. After smuggling them out of Iraq and translating them from Aramaic, Theo realizes the extent of his career-making find, for he is in possession of the Fifth Gospel, and it offers a shocking and incomparable eyewitness account of Christ's crucifixion and last days on Earth."@en
  • ""Theo Griepenkerl, visiting Iraq, discovers an ancient Aramaic manuscript and smuggles it back to Canada. When he translates it, it turns out to be an eyewitness account of the crucifixion, revealing the all-too-fallible humanity of Christ. Theo writes a foreword, finds a small publisher game enough to take it on and the narrative moves to the book tour. Fun cameos abound: homicidal believers, suicidal ex-believers, sneering cynics, a nuggetty little smalltime publisher and a glossy American senior editor who pulls out a handgun to save Theo from a pistol-toting crazy. Then Theo's Manhattan reading is firebombed, he's kidnapped by an odd-couple of mismatched zealots - and the plot really ramps up."--Provided by publisher."@en
  • "Theo Griepenkerl is a modest academic with an Olympian ego. When he visits a looted museum in Iraq, looking for treasures he can ship back to Canada, he finds nine papyrus scrolls that have lain hidden for 2,000 years. Once translated from Aramaic, these prove to be a fifth Gospel, written by an eyewitness of Jesus Christ's last days. But when Theo decides to share this sensational discovery with the world, he fails to imagine the impact the new Gospel will have on Christians, Arabs, homicidal maniacs and Amazon customers. Like Prometheus's gift of fire, it has incendiary consequences."
