Die Walküre

From the Gasteig in Munich: Germany's most popular Tenor Jonas Kaufmann presents an evening with the most famous German operatic arias. Amongst them 'Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schon' from W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute, 'In fernem Land' from Wagner's Lohengrin and 'Wintersturme' from Walkure, as well as works by Carl Maria von Weber ('Freischutz'). With this repertoire Kaufmann goes back to his roots: 'I grew up with this music. It is embedded in my genes.'

  • "Filmed at Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceau in 2003, Harry Kupfer's acclaimed production, first staged in Berlin, numbers among the greates productions of modern times."
  • ""Acclaim for Robert Lepage's ground-breaking production: A high-tech Ring with a traditional heart (Boston Globe). In Die Walkure, Terfel's Wotan crackled with intensity, incisive diction and gravelly power. Voigt invested energy, feeling and character in every phrase. Kaufmann looked like a young demigod. Westbroek: rich, throbbing and intense: Levine drew exciting, wondrously natural playing from the great Met orchestra (New York Times)"--Container."
  • "Robert Lepage's landmark staging of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, unveiled over the course of the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, was the first new Met production of the complete cycle in more than 20 years. Combining state-of-the-art technology with traditional storytelling, it brings Wagner's vision into the 21st century. With Die Walküre, the story of the Ring enters the world of human beings. Jonas Kaufmann and Eva-Maria Westbroek are Siegmund and Sieglinde, the twin children of Wotan, sung by Bryn Terfel. Deborah Voigt stars in the title role of the Valkyrie Brünnhilde, Wotan's favorite daughter. James Levine conducts."

  • "The second opera in Wagner's epic "Ring cycle.""
  • "The gorgeous and evocative Otto Schenk/Günther Schneider-Siemssen production continues with this second opera in Wagner's Ring cycle. Hildegard Behrens brings deep empathy to Brünnhilde, the favorite daughter of the god Wotan (James Morris) who nevertheless defies him. Morris's portrayal of Wotan is deservedly legendary, as is Christa Ludwig, as Fricka. Jessye Norman and Gary Lakes are Sieglinde and Siegmund, and Kurt Moll is the threatening Hunding. James Levine and the Met orchestra provide astonishing color and drama."
  • "Summary: Wotan, chief of the gods, wants to acquire the Nibelung hoard of gold, including the ring. He needs a "free hero" to win back the gold."
  • "New productions of Wagner's The Ring at the Bayreuth Festival are mounted every 6 years. Bayreuth recordings of the complete cycle are rare; this is the 2nd filmed version. The Kupfer/Barenboim Ring was performed over a 5-yr. period and recorded at the conclusion."
  • "The second opera in Wagner's Ring cycle, in which twins Siegmund and Sieglinde fall in love and are helped by the Valkyrie Brünnhilde."
  • "L'une des oeuvres majeures de Wagner, enregistrée pour la première fois lors du prestigieux et très fermé festival de Bayreuth en juin et juillet 92."

  • "A presentation of the second of the four operas that comprise Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung), Richard Wagner's epic, which follows the struggles of gods, heroes, and several mythical creatures over the eponymous magic Ring that grants the power to rule the world. In this part, Siegmund falls in love with Sieglinde and must battle her husband, Hunding. The Valkyrie Brunhilde sides with Siegmund and in punished for her disobedience by Wotan, the ruler of the gods."
