Gyrotropic resonances in afterglow plasmas

Observations of the reflection of radio waves from a decaying plasma column contained in a steady axial magnetic field exhibit a repetitive pattern of resonances as the ratio of radio frequency to electron cyclotron frequency is varied through successive harmonics. The resonances are interpreted as weakly damped electron plasma oscillations. The observations are compared with a resonance spectrum obtained from a model in which one employs WKB techniques in conjunction with the Bernstein dispersion relation for a dissipation-free plasma. The connection between the zero-field electroacoustic resonances in the plasma sheath and the gyrotropic resonances in the plasma core for frequencies near the cyclotron harmonic is also discussed.
