Unimolecular decomposition of cyclobutane derivatives at high pressure

Rate-constant-versus-pressure diagrams were obtained for decomposition of ethylcyclobutane diluted with nitrogen at pressure ranges from 305 to 1940 lb/sq in and at 410 plus or minus or -0.1 C. Anomalous behavior of the rate constant was observed, decreasing slightly with increasing pressure. The anomalous effect is explained in terms of transition state theory where the normal reactant molecules are assumed to be in equilibrium with activated molecules. The volume of activation is calculated to be 35 ml/mole.
