Waste oil burn-off in Coast Guard powerplants : waste oil filtering systems and diesel engine performance

This report documents two tasks of a continuing study to determine the feasibility of burning waste lubricating oils in Coast Guard powerplants. The first task evaluated the effectiveness of two treatment devices for the clean-up of waste lubricating oil. It was found that a commercially available diesel filter pack is more effective than an oily-water separator. In the second task, exhaust emissions and performance were measured with a GM6-71 diesel engine when mixtures of lube oil in fuel oil up to 10 percent were burned. No short-term degradation in emissions or performance were observed. (Author).
