Evaluation of Human Tissue Grafts Used for Reparative Surgery on Battle Casualities

Non-viable tissue grafts have been used for over two decades in the repair of injuries suffered through trauma. In many instances, freeze-dried human tissues supplied by the U.S. Navy Tissue Bank have been clinically evaluated. In other instances, such evaluation was not complete and further study and analysis of results were deemed necessary. To aid in this endeavour it was necessary to organize Tissue Graft Registry in such a manner as to make possible the following study and the evaluation of patients with freeze-dried homografts. This was accomplished by manual rearrangement of the Registry and by an analysis of biomedical data by time-sharing computers. To determine the effectiveness of cancellous bone grafts, the results of packing bone defects with freeze-dried cancellous bone allografts were subject of a specific study.
