TOW Gunner Selection

Gunner selection was addressed in two stages: (1) Advanced Infantry Training graduates entering TOW training at Fort Benning were examined prior to and during training. A number of personal, demographic, and behavioral measures were taken and discriminant analyses were run to try to differentiate trainees who succeeded at training (Qualified on the M-70 simulator) from those who did not. (2) Subsequently, a training effectiveness analysis test was conducted at the TRADOC Combined Arms Test Activity (TCATA) in which over 200 soldiers were trained, and then fired live missiles. Similar demographic data, etc., were collected on this group and similar discriminant analyses were performed. The aim of these analyses was to predict/select those gunners who would actually hit a tank target in live fire. Four separate selection models were developed: two for training success, and two for live fire success. Selection models were successfully developed for training on the M-70 simulator. However, the TCATA test showed that M-70 success was not significantly related to live fire success. Attempts to select gunners for the live fire situation were successful statistically, but the contribution of the selection model was found to be very small in terms of llkelihood of successful gunnery. This is largely due to the fact that unselected and virtually untrained gunners were found to perform very well with the TOW system in the TCATA test. The test groups achieved hit probabilities, even with minimum training, which closely approximate the designed system potential.
