Faust

The film begins with the devil (Emil Jannings), boasting to the archangel St. Michael that he can cause anyone on earth to become completely corrupt. He decides that an alchemist named Faust should be his quarry. A bargain is struck: the agreement being that if this elderly man can be so thoroughly influenced that he will only commit evil - then Satan shall be given dominion over earth.

  • "God and Satan war over earth; to settle things, they wager on the soul of Faust, a learned and prayerful alchemist. During a plague, Faust despairs and burns his books after failing to stop death; Satan sends Mephisto to tempt Faust, first with insight into treating the plague and then with a day's return to youth. Mephisto is clear, timing the end of this 24 hours as Faust embraces the beautiful Duchess of Parma. Faust trades his soul for youth."
  • "Newly restored. Inspired by the German legend and by Goethe's classic tale, Murnau's Faust tells the story of an alchemist (played by Gösta Ekman) who, struggling with his faith amidst a devastating plague, is offered the power to cure and the gift of youth ... in exchange for his soul. As the diabolical Mephisto, Emil Jannings (The Last Laugh) delivers a performance of operatic scale and intensity, by turns charming, comical, and horrific."@en
