Normalität und Verbrechen lagen hier dicht beieinander. Sybille Steinbacher schildert knapp und präzise die Geschichte von Auschwitz. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die konzeptionelle, zeitliche und räumliche Einheit von Vernichtungspolitik und 'Lebensraumeroberung'. Sie fragt nach der Wahrnehmung des Mordgeschehens in der (deutschen) Öffentlichkeit und nach der Situation der Häftlinge, nach Möglichkeiten zum Widerstand gegen die Lager-SS und dem Verhalten der Alliierten. Ein eigenes Kapitel ist der Frage nach der Zahl der Opfer gewidmet. Abschliessend werden die juristische Ahndung der Verbrechen nach Kriegsende und die 'Auschwitz-Lüge' behandelt. Sybille Steinbacher ist Professorin für Zeitgeschichte an der Universität Wien. Sie hat Publikationen zur Geschichte des Nationalsozialismus und des Holocaust vorgelegt, darunter ''Musterstadt' Auschwitz. Germanisierungspolitik und Judenmord in Ostoberschlesien' (2000) und 'Dachau. Die Stadt und das Konzentrationslager in der NS-Zeit' (1993). Zuletzt erschien der von Nikolaus Wachsmann und ihr herausgegebene Band 'Die Linke im Visier. Zur Errichtung der Konzentrationslager 1933' (2014)."
