Da sich Gott als unergründliches Geheimnis zu erkennen gibt, können es nur Negationen zur Sprache bringen. Das Vorgehen wie auch die Begriffe für Gottes alles überragende Transzendenz schöpft Dionysius aus neuplatonischen Überlieferungen. Seine "negative Theologie" dient der Vergegenwärtigung der verheißenen Zukunft Gottes jenseits menschlicher Welterkenntnis."
