  • "Summary: Tannhäuser, the knight minstrel, has yielded to the pleasures of the mountain of Venus. He now calls on the Virgin's help to escape them. Meeting his former friends, he is persuaded by Wolfram to return to Wartburg. In the Wartburg's hall of song, Tannhäuser's beloved, Elisabeth, and her father the Landgrave await the assembly of knights for a contest of song. As the contest proeceeds, Tannhäuser is scornful of the feeble love songs offered and he sings pasionately of the delights of Venusberg to the horror of all assembled. The Langrave orders him on a pilgimage to Rome to seek absolution from the Pope. However, later, Wolfram meets Tannhäuser who has been told that his chances of pardon are as likely as the flowering of the Pope's staff. Tannhäuser decides to return to Venusberg but a funeral procession bearing the bier of Elisabeth who has died of grief comes from the Wartburg. A band of pilgrims brings the papal staff, which is now in flower. Elisabeth's prayers have redeemed Tannhäuser."
  • "When this gorgeous production opened audiences gasped, then heartily applauded. Otto Schenk and Günther Schneider-Siemssen magnificently invoked the world of Wagner's opera, from Venus's erotic lair to the world of medieval pageantry. Within this stunning setting the cast of great singing actors are truly at home. Richard Cassilly is the tortured Tannhäuser, torn between the sensual delights of Tatiana Troyanos's enticing Venus and the pure love of Eva Marton's radiant Elisabeth. Bernd Weikl is a truly noble Wolfram. James Levine and the superb Met orchestra, chorus, and ballet bring Wagner's colorful score to life."
  • "Based on the two Germanic legends of Tannhäuser and the song contest at Wartburg. Key themes are the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love."
  • "Tannhäuser, a minstrel knight, weary of the monotony of a year spent with the goddess of love, Venus, decides to return to earth. At a tournment of song he competes for the hand of Elizabeth, but shocks the assembly when he instead sings the praises of Venus. In remorse he joins a band of pilgrims on their way to Rome. Denied absolution by the Pope, Tannäuser decides to return to Venus. At the last moment he learns he has been saved by the prayers of Elizabeth, whose funeral procession passes. Tannäuser joins her in death."

Repudiating the goddess, he finds himself at the Wartburg where he meets the saintly Elisabeth who encourages his quest for redemption. Journeying to Rome, Tannhäuser is rejected when told by the Pope that he could no more be forgiven his sins than could the papal staff break into flower. Returning to the Wartburg to die, Tannhäuser expires as a pilgrim band enters, proclaiming the miracle that the Pope's staff has blossomed."
