  • "Dieses Buch bringt im wesentlichen den Inhalt der Gifford::Vorträge, die ich von Januar bis März 1927 an der Universität Edinburg gehalten habe. Es behandelt die philosophische Auswirkung der großen Veränderungen, denen unser naturwissenschaftliches Denken im Laufe der letzten Jahrzehnte unterworfen gewesen ist. Relativitäts:: theorie und Quantentheorie haben zu fremdartigen neuen Vorstellungen über das Wesen der physikalischen Welt ge:: führt, und die Weiterentwicklung der Prinzipien der Thermo:: dynamik hat eine zwar allmählichere, aber darum nicht weniger tiefgreifende Veränderung hervorgerufen. Die ersten elf Kapitel befassen sich in der Hauptsache mit den neuen physikalischen Theorien, mit den Gründen, die zu ihrer Aufstellung und Anerkennung geführt haben, und vor allem mit den Begriffen, die ihre Grundlage zu bilden scheinen. Das Ziel ist, das physikalische Weltbild zu· be:: schreiben, wie es sich heute darstellt, und, soweit es noch unvollständig ist, die Richtung zu beurteilen, nach der die modernen Ideen zu deuten scheinen. In den letzten vier Ka:: piteln werde ich die Stellung untersuchen, welche dieser naturwissenschaftlichen Auffassung im Rahmen allgemeinster Weltanschauung, einschließlich der Religion, zukommt. In welchem Geist diese Betrachtungen verstanden sein wollen, habe ich im Schlußabsatz der Einleitung (S. 7) näher erörtert. Ich hoffe, die Kapitel naturwissenschaftlichen Inhalts werden, auch abgesehen von ihrer Beziehung zu dem letzten Teil des Buches, das Interesse des Lesers finden, doch sind sie nicht ganz so geschrieben, wie es in einer unabhängigen Darstellung geschehen wäre."
