Frames Autobiographie gehört zu den bedeutendsten Beispielen für dieses Genre im 20. Jahrhundert. Janet Frame wurde 1924 als drittes von fünf Kindern eines Eisenbahnarbeiters in Dunedin, Neuseeland, geboren, wo sie 2004 auch starb. Frame ist Autorin von zwölf Romanen, darunter "Wenn Eulen schrein" und "Gesichter im Wasser", fünf Erzählsammlungen, darunter "Die Lagune". Sie veröffentlichte Gedichte und ein Kinderbuch. Der posthum erschienene Roman "Dem neuen Sommer entgegen" (C.H.Beck, 2010) wurde international gefeiert. Jane Campions preisgekrönter Film zu "Ein Engel an meiner Tafel" (1990) war ein grandioser Erfolg und machte die Autorin weltweit bekannt."
