Devil may care

Ellie is young, rich, in love and engaged. In the carefree days before marriage and new responsibility, she decides to house-sit at Aunt Kate's pallatial estate in Burton, Virginia. With its nearly invisible housekeepers and plethora of pets, Ellie feels right at home. But when she opens an antique book about the town's aristocracy, she finds disturbing secrets that extend to her own family. Suddenly, Ellie's interest in the past is attracting a slew of unwelcome guests -- some of them living and some, perhaps not. Unwittingly, she has arounsed a terrible vengeance that is now aimed at her.

  • "The Devil-may-care begins with laughter ... and ends in a maelstrom of fear. It was the beginning of the best of times for Ellie and Henry--young, happy, and in love, ready to spend two weeks house sitting her Aunt Kate's Virginia mansion. Everything was in front of them, and they laughed in the sunlight ... and then Ellie screamed. The book she had found in the antiquarian shop was to be a special gift for Aunt Kate, a story of the town's aristocracy. Every aristocracy has its secrets, though, and Burton, Virginia, wanted theirs kept that way. And so, it seemed, did their ancestors."@en
