  • "The study of moderates in French politics, and more specifically, the influence of moderate Christians, has long been a blind spot in French historiography. In an effort to fill this void, historians have contributed to this book, as a result of a conference held in Lille in 2005 and 2006, and which can be summarized with three essential results. First result: the contribution of eminent historians, specialists in European countries in which the relationship between political philosophy and theology has not been subject to the same reservations as in France, has helped to better define the singularity of French historiography. Second result: historians, specialists in the turbulent relations between the Church and the Republic, confirmed the often decisive role of these moderate Catholics in the establishment and stabilization of the Republican regime. They also highlighted their contributions in rebuilding the Republic in the aftermath of Liberation. Third result: how the option of a specifically religious, philosophical, and theological order, and the choice in political order are linked together."
