  • "In this 1902 play, Lord Loam is a man who does not see class distinctions. His butler, Crichton, and his servants mingle with his tea party guests, to the embarrassment of all. Crichton, especially, disapproves of this conduct. But will they all feel the same civilized" way when their party is shipwrecked on a desert island?"
  • "Social conditions change when the members of the household of a British Peer are shipwrecked on an island for two years and come to depend on the resourcefulness of the butler for their survival."

  • "A Fantasy in Four Acts. J. M. Barrie. It is the Earl of Loam's whim to invite his servants once a month to the drawing-room where they are treated as social equals. His daughter and friends are forced to serve them much to the distaste of Crichton, the butler, who knows his place. He accompanies the Earl on a yachting party with the three daughters, an affected young man and a sporting parson, as well as the ladys maid who is in love with Crichton. They are wrecked on a desert island and Crichton, at first imperceptibly, takes command and wins their devotion by his resourcefulness. -Amazon.com."@en
  • "Though today he is best remembered as the creator of Peter Pan, British author J.M. Barrie was a playwright with wide-ranging interests and an irreverent sense of humor. The Admirable Crichton is a witty send-up of clashes between the social classes in turn-of-the-century England."@en
  • "Five of the English author's well-known plays collected in one volume. The admirable Crichton: When a wealthy family and its servants are shipwrecked and marooned on a desert island, only the butler has the skill and resourcefulness to keep everyone alive. Peter Pan: Peter Pan, a magical boy who will not grow up, takes Wendy, John, and Michael Darling away to live in Neverland. When Wendy grew up: Wendy, now married, is putting her daughter to bed when Peter Pan returns, unaware of how much time has passed since his last visit. What every woman knows: The Wylies, a well-to-do but uneducated Scottish family, are concerned about their daughter, Maggie, a plain young woman who they fear, will remain a spinster. One night the Wylies discover that a serious young university student, John Shand, has been breaking into their home so that he can read books from their large library. Shand is penniless and cannot afford to buy books for his law school education. Maggie Wylie and John Shand come to an understanding: that her family will fund his education if, at the end of five years, he agrees to marry her. Mary Rose: A woman mysteriously disappears from an island twice in her life, first as a child and then later as an adult. When she returns both times, she has no notion of having been gone and shows no sign of aging."@en
  • ""Once a month, Lord Loam encourages his servants to enter the drawing room for tea. This ritual defiance of tradition disturbs Crichton, the butler, who regards the class system as "the natural outcome of a civilized society." When the entire household is shipwrecked and stranded on a desert island, a new social order emerges -- with comic results for master and servant. This classic English comedy, written by the author of Peter Pan, combines light entertainment with serious undertones concerning the class structure of British society during the early twentieth century. First produced in 1902, the play was adapted for radio and television and has been frequently revived on the stage"--"
