Neben ihren 'Mumin'-Büchern, durch die sie internationalen Ruhm erlangte, verfasste sie zahlreiche Romane und Erzählungen. In den frühen 50er-Jahren lernte sie die Grafikerin Tuulikki Pietilä kennen, mit der sie bis zu ihrem Tod zusammenlebte. Die Beziehung zwischen den beiden Künsterlinnen fand Eingang in viele der autobiografisch geprägten Romane und Erzählungen Tove Janssons, allem voran in 'Fair Play', das hier in der Übersetzung Birgitta Kicherers erstmals in deutscher Sprache vorliegt."
