This text for students of English as a second language is designed to develop reading skills and to expand general vocabulary as a preparatory step toward reading and understanding college texts. Particular attention is given to reading technique and to the development of reading speed. The articles, representative of current newspaper and magazine writing, cover a wide range of subject matter in order to expose the students to various content demands of general reading material. These articles are of graded difficulty, and the exercises utilize vocabulary and structures introduced in preceding chapters. Each article is followed by the following exercises: (1) analysis of ideas and relationships; (2) interpretation of words and phrases; (3) synonyms; (4) prepositions and verb-completers; (5) supplementary vocabulary exercise; (6) determiners; (7) word forms; (8) sentence construction; (9) topics for discussion and composition; (10) reading reconstruction; and (11) comprehension check.
