Benin

We tend to think of African countries as very much alike - which just goes to show how little we know about them! The countries on the African continent all have their very own identity, culture, history, ethnical mix, heritage and language. And this diversity is reflected in each country's media and tv landscape! On the occasion of the 2010 'Africa Year' - the Continent hosts for the first time an international sports event in the shape of the Soccer World Cup in South Africa! - 'TV Around the World' offers a special 'Africa series' (all in English version) looking at 12 countries, each one very different from the other. Nevertheless, they don't hesitate to pick up a good idea from their neighbours when they see it, like 'Le Grand Journal du Bien', the 'All-is-well News' programme on TV in Benin! In Angola, TV likes to look to the future; programmes are on reconstruction and on how to be a model citizen. 'Papa Ngulo' is one of the protagonists of the show, he is the perfect opposite of a model citizen ... and he is very popular. In neighbouring Namibia, 'Green Horizons' a weekly programme on public TV addresses the problems of farmers in rural areas, whereas the big hit in Ghana is the local series 'District Colonial Court', a nostalgic series set in the colonial years of the 1930's. And we discover that TV in Mozambique is as young as its democracy since it was created after the first democratic elections in 1994!
