  • "Special needs provision in schools continues to be a major source of anxiety for teachers and other educators, politicians and parents. The whole area of 'special educational needs' and 'inclusion' is often shrouded with uncertainty about what it means, either in theory or in practice, or what it entails. There is an evidence that many young people are placed in mainstream without proper concern either for what it takes to ensure that those students can engage fully with their learning and be involved in the social life of the school, or for the implications for the management of the school as a whole and classes within it. Stories in the national press and questions asked in parliament in the past year or so about inadequate special needs provision in schools have served to heighten awareness of the need for an improved level of teacher training and professional development in this area of education, and for improved communication with parents and others about the issues involved. In light of this degree of public concern, for newly qualified teachers, particularly, but for other teachers and school governors as well, being faced with students labelled as 'having special educational needs' can be a daunting prospect. For parents and families, the special needs labelling of their child can be equally daunting. There is, therefore, a need for material that addresses these issues, that is clearly theorised and translates theorising into practice in a straightforward, intelligible and practical way. This book aims to address that need."@en
