Modern painting

Irish novelist and art critic George Moore writes his opinions on controversial issues within the 19th-century art world, including photography as an art form, sex in art, the relationship between religion and art and a rejection of Realism for Impressionism. These ideals that the author addresses all inspired the beginnings of modern art. Moore's opinions seem shockingly biased and sometimes prejudiced, but do give the reader a 19th-century perspective.

  • "Published in 1893, Modern Painting is considered among the first serious attempts to introduce the art of the Impressionists to an English audience. Drawn from articles Moore had written for newspapers and magazines, the book did much to influence the critical reception of this new" style of painting. He discusses artists Edouard Manet, Alfred Sisley, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Philip Wilson Steer and includes chapters written on topics in art."@en
