The primary school an environment for education; a collection of essays for administrators, teachers, parents, architects, building research workers and others

The present state of design on the primary school environment is represented in a collection of essays and papers. The report generalizes about qualitative features of school environment and some of their consequences from the standpoint of a multi-disciplinary environmental research group's observations, in the course of which some systematic methods of subjective appraisal were attempted. Part one of the report gives the architect-editor's personal interpretations of the pilkington research unit's impressions in the form of an overview of the total environment and its component parts--external, spatial, visual, thermal, and aural. In part two, an educationist discusses the function that the built environment must be designed to serve. Part three contains a number of appraisals of primary school environments written by members of the unit and by interested teachers and student teachers who have collaborated in this project. Part four includes tabulated data not generally available and documents relating to other activities in this project. The major objectives of this report are--(1) to contribute to a better understanding of the total environment in buildings, and (2) to help establish a more critical attitude towards the design of school environments than at present exists. Copies of this document may be obtained by writing to peter manning, 37 egremont promenade, wallasey, cheshire, england. Price, 40 shillings. (Rk).
