Cranmer and the English Reformation

Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury under Henry VIII and Edward VI, was a central figure in the struggle that eclipsed papal authority in England and assured supremacy to the crown. Timid and at times vacillating, he repudiated his Protestant views during the short-lived reign of Mary. Yet, facing the stake for heresy and treason, he reaffirmed his original beliefs and accepted death with a martyr's courage. Cranmer's enduring contributions to his people include his leading roles in making the Bible available in English and in providing them with the Book of Common Prayer. -- cover.
