James Ward (1758-1848) was born in Fincastle County, Virginia. In 1803 he moved to the Kentucky side of the valley of the Big Sandy. In 1810 he married Elizabeth Williamson; they raised eleven children in Floyd, Lawrence, Johnson, and Martin counties. Other Ward families in this area of Kentucky include those of Solomon, Shadrack, Sarah Chapman, William, and Mary Williamson.

"James Ward was born 25 March 1758 in Fincastle County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth WiIliamson in about 1810. They had eleven children. James served in the American Revolution. He died 15 July 1848 in Lawrence County, Kentucky. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and Texas."
