Photographs for the company series

The series is comprised of photographic prints and negatives created by the Ford Motor Company Engineering Photographic Department, formerly the Dearborn Tractor Plant Photographic Department. The images are arranged chronologically by negative number; a negative log provides a date and a brief description of each image. There are no subject indexes to the series, however, a chronological negative log lists the date and a brief description of an image or group of images. This extensive run of photographs richly documents the engineering and design of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury automobiles from 1918 into the 1950s. Tractors, trucks and airplanes are also represented, as well as Ford Motor Company factories in the United States and abroad and Ford Village Industries. There are photographs that capture dignitaries and celebrities visiting plants; wartime factory conversion; Ford vessels including Henry Ford's yacht, the Sialia; air tours and air meets; and the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railroad. The series also includes a number of copy prints reflecting Henry and Edsel Ford's interests, for example, most of the Rouge River Plant photographs created by Charles Sheeler for the company in 1927, photographs of American Aluminum Company produced by Margaret Bourke-White in the mid 1930s, photographs of early airplanes, and images of Ford family homes. There is far more diversity in the photographs taken in the earlier years, with topics ranging from radio broadcasting to soybean experimentation and the construction of employee housing. In later years, however, the photographs are largely related to designers, the design process, and vehicle production. Included also are details of parts and documentation of testing activities.
