Robert Lucas

Biography of Robert Lucas (1781-1853), who served as the governor of Ohio between 1832 and 1835, and as governor of the territory of Iowa between 1838 and 1841. n 1838 and 1841. Robert was a direct descendant of Quaker Robert Lucas (who immigrated from England to Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1679) and a son of William Lucas, who had served in the Revolutionary War. He was essentially a self-taught politician, moving from a Jeffersonian Republican to a Jacksonian Democrat, and then to a states rights advocate without going so far as the doctrine of nullification.
