Unlike most criticism of E.E. Cummings' poetry, the present study sacrifices comprehensiveness for concentration. This book analyzes a relatively small number of poems; it analyzes whole poems rather than stanzas and lines. While it points to what is essential in Cummings' work by showing that he was highly representative of both modern and American art, the book shows how Cummings reflected the contradictory principles of realism and formalism, particularly as these principles carried on their battle in the visual arts of the twentieth century; and it shows finally how Cummings embodied the unique American tradition in literature, which stretches from Thoreau, Melville, and Whitman to T.S. Eliot and William Faulkner.
