"Contemporary African lifestyles are influenced by indigenous, Islamic, and western factors. Intrinsic to African society is the family, which offers protection for the young and loyalty to the old. The village, residence of the ancestors, is the seat of traditional African government, where elders make decisions based on consensus. This decentralized system was sorely disrupted by British colonialism, which endeavoured to impose parliamentary government, the cash crop system, land ownership, and taxation. Mazrui examines the traditional roles of the African woman as guardian of earth, water and fire, and her diminished status in the colonial era."
