Quiet Children and the Classroom Teacher

Quiet children form the largest group of learning-disabled students in the schools. This booklet is designed for teachers who wish to help such children. The first section provides a summary of current theory and research concerning reasons children are quiet, different kinds of quiet children, the phenomenon of communication apprehension, and classroom behavior of quiet children and quiet teachers. The second section offers practical suggestions for identifying quiet children and working with them more effectively. Included in this section are scales that teachers can use to ascertain their own verbal activity and communication-apprehension levels, a scale to use in identifying quiet students, and suggestions for developing a communication-permissive classroom, for working with communication-apprehensive children, and for referring students for special help.
