Alice-for-short : a dichronism

In late Victorian England, a lower-class family with lots of drinking problems: in a drunken rage, the father fatally injures the mother and then kills himself. The little girl is left an orphan and is taken in by a well-to-do family. The story then follows their lives for the next 25 years or so.
