Teaching safety in the elementary school

Open All Close All

http://schema.org/description

  • "Every year, accidents claim the lives of thousands of children and many thousands more are injured. A need exists for schools to teach children the important components of safe behavior and safe conditions; safety instruction in the elementary schools cannot be left to chance. The inclusion of safety education across all elementary levels and subjects constitutes the multidisciplinary approach that achieves best results. Due to their vulnerability, children are often the target of acts of violence. It is therefore necessary to provide safer, more secure schools and use instructional methods that teach children how to protect themselves both at school and at home. This publication is divided into five sections. The first presents general safety information for teachers; section 2 deals with special problems in teaching safety; learning experiences for primary and intermediate grades are covered in section 3; section 4 provides information on school security and emergency planning; and the final section lists selected resource materials on safety. Safety instruction is not merely an accumulation of facts; it is the development of skills and attitudes that will promote the safety and well-being of all elementary students. (LL)"
