Dabei geht er vom Alltagsleben eines Gladiators aus und beschreibt v.a. die Ausbildung und den meist tödlichen Ablauf der Kämpfe. Der Anfangsteil über die Gründe, wie man überhaupt zum Gladiator wurde, gibt zudem eine gute allgemeine Einführung in die Rolle der Sklaverei in Rom. Die witzigen farbigen Zeichnungen illustrieren die Aussagen der anschaulichen, oft leicht zynischen Texte. Sarkastische "TopTipps von Experten" lockern den Band weiter auf. Leider fehlen weiterführende Hinweise. Als Ergänzung zu den umfassenderen Einführungen in die römische Geschichte z.B. "Die Römer" (BA 12/02) und "Detektiv im alten Rom" (BA 1/02) kann eine Anschaffung auch Schulbüchereien empfohlen werden.. Aus der Sicht eines Gladiatoren wird der Alltag im antiken Rom beschrieben; reich illustriert."
