On Liberty, Representative Government, the Subjection of Women : Three essays

"The subject of this Essay is not the so-called Liberty of the Will, so unfortunately opposed to the misnamed doctrine of Philosophical Necessity; but Civil, or Social Liberty: the nature and limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual. A question seldom stated, and hardly ever discussed, in general terms, but which profoundly influences the practical controversies of the age by its latent presence, and is likely soon to make itself recognized as the vital question of the future. It is so far from being new, that, in a certain sense, it has divided mankind, almost from the remotest ages; but in the stage of progress into which the more civilized portions of the species have now entered, it presents itself under new conditions, and requires a different and more fundamental treatment"--Chapter. • "Since its first publication in 1859, few works of political philosophy have provoked such continuous controversy as John Stuart Mill's "On Liberty", a passionate argument on behalf of freedom of self-expression. This classic work is now available in this volume which also includes essays by scholars in a range of fields. The text begins with a biographical essay by David Bromwich and an interpretative essay by George Kateb. Then Jean Bethke Elshtain, Owen Fiss, Judge Richard A. Posner and Jeremy Waldron present commentaries on the pertinence of Mill's thinking to early 21st century debates. They discuss, for example, the uses of authority and tradition, the shifting legal boundaries of free speech and free action, the relation of personal liberty to market individualism, and the tension between the right to live as one pleases and the right to criticize anyone's way of life."@en

  • "On Liberty is a philosophical work by 19th century English philosopher John Stuart Mill, first published in 1859. • "This new edition of On Liberty is the first to combine John Stuart Mill's influential work with a set of relevant primary sources by Mill and his contemporaries. Alan Kahan's introduction provides students with crucial background on nineteenth-century British politics and society; intriguing biographical details about Mill's early life, intellectual career, and marriage; and thought-provoking discussion of the core issues of autonomy and freedom that On Liberty addresses. The related primary documents - including an excerpt from Mill's famous proto-feminist treatise On the Subjection of Women - offer useful insights into the philosopher's intellectual outlook as well as a fascinating view into On Liberty's rather stormy reception. Excerpts from Mill's diary and autobiography, contemporary reviews of On Liberty, and appreciations of Mill by his colleagues all deepen students' understanding of this remarkable work and its equally remarkable author. Headnotes and gloss notes to the documents, a selected bibliography, a chronology of Mill's life, and a set of questions for consideration offer additional pedagogical support. (Barnes & Noble)."

  • "These two essays by John Stuart Mill, England's greatest nineteenth-century philosopher, are the fruit of six hundred years of progressive thought about individual rights and the responsibilities of society. Together they provide the moral and theoretical justification for liberal democracy as we know it, and their incalculable influence on modern history testifies not only to the force of their arguments, but also to the power ideas can have over human affairs. • "On Liberty (1859) and Utilitarianism (1861) are the two most enduring works of the great British economist, philosopher and ethical theorist John Stuart Mill. In the former he not only built a powerful case for freedom of speech, but also argued that the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. Mankind are greater gainers by suffering each other to live as seems good to themselves, than by compelling each to live as seems good to the rest. In Utilitarianism he developed Bentham's Greatest Happiness Principle into a more sophisticated ethical system, famously acknowledging Better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. For Mill, To do as one would be done by, and to love one's neighbour as oneself, constitute the ideal perfection of utilitarian morality. It is a far cry from the utilitarianism parodied in Dickens novel Hard Times."@en

  • "In his treatise On Liberty (1859) Mill argues that in the past the danger had been that monarchs held power at the expense of the common people and the struggle was one of gaining liberty by limiting such governmental power. But now that power has largely passed into the hands of the people at large through democratic forms of government, the danger is that the majority denies liberty to individuals, whether explicitly through laws, which he calls 'acts of public authority', or more subtly through morals and social pressure, which he calls 'collective opinion'."@en

  • ""Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign". The whole of John Stuart Mill's "On Liberty" is dedicated to this simple principle. While many of his immediate predecessors and contemporaries, from Adam Smith to Godwin and Thoreau, had celebrated liberty, it was Mill who organized the idea into a philosophy and put it into the form in which it is known today. In this text, Mill argues that liberty must play a central role in social policy, necessitating a redrawing of the line between the authority wielded by the state and the independence of the individual."
