He spent his early years at sea, until the course of his life was suddenly changed by meeting with a member of Mazzini's "Young Italy", a society dedicated to the task of driving from their thrones the reactionary rulers of the various states into which the peninsular was then divided, and the making of Italy one and free. The rest of his life was dominated by this idea, and he inspired his followers with his own passionate courage and single minded determination. The author has drawn a vivid, sympathetic portrait of this remarkable man, and has given an account of his unique contribution to the making of Italy."
