- "Artist's statement - "The book's premise was to create one long, continuous landscape as a montage of places in Buffalo that I feel typify the beauty and history - both good and bad - of the city. The direction of it comes from the actual path that you can drive if you were to take I-90W from the East and get off onto Rt. 33 at Exit51W. The first page is the landscape of suburbia as you come along those roads and into the city. You then take Rt. 198 from Rt. 33 and continue heading west. This takes you past the statue of David and the Albright-Knox on page 2 and the Richardson Complex and the Buffalo History Museum on pages 3 and 4. Amidst these historic landmarks is a blend of historic old houses that you see on Richmond if you were to get off the highway and head towards the West Side. That is where pages 5 and 6 are drawn from. Having lived on the Westside for two years a bit ago, I spent a lot of time traversing from Niagara to Richmond, passing boarded up houses on one block only to see beautiful, renovated estates on the next. The Westside of Buffalo has become an incredible litmus test in the last 5 years to the possibilities of urban revitalization and neighborhood preservation which I think is a powerful tool for Buffalo to hone. I like to think of these pages as speaking of the city's hardships as well as its potential hence the scaffold and ladder next to one of the buildings. Pages 7 and 8 are where you hit Niagara St. and the river. As you head south, you pass the Peace Bridge and come into the city center with the Electric Tower, City Hall, and the Liberty Building all packed in next to the grain mills just past the city. As you take the skyway on Page 9 past the city center, you can head down Rt. 5, out of town, and past the Ford Stamping Plant. Having lived in the city for almost 10 years, I have spent more time there than any other place in the US and I think of this book as a poem to a city I both love and admire for all it's beauty, strengths and hardships.""
