"The Index to ships' pictures in print, 1491-1991 lists appearances of ships' pictures published in 101 books, journals, magazines, newspapers, and microforms. It comprises some 3221 entries. The majority are photographs, others woodcuts, likenesses by artists in oil, pencil, and watercolour. A few are even ships' models.... This index is international in coverage and not limited to ships sailing in Australian waters. It began as an index to pictures of 19th century steam and sailing vessels, which brought immigrants to Australia. However, it has been expanded to include ships of earlier and later periods.
