Roberta M.L. Randall Sheaff was born in 1909 to Edith Edna Leighton and Benjamin Strafford Randall. Roberta's mother was a descendant of Thomas Leighton, who immigrated to Dover, New Hampshire in 1630. The Sheaff family came from Calais, Maine. Roberta and her family lived on House Island, one of the islands in Casco Bay, in Portland Harbor, Maine. The island was once used as a smallpox quarantine station and as detention quarters for immigrants coming through Ellis Island.
