Memoirs of Mrs. Fitzherbert with an account of her marriage with H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, afterwards King George IV

Maria Anne Fitzherbert was the twice-widowed, longtime companion and mistress of the Prince Regent. She and the Prince were married secretly, and illegally, in 1785. The marriage was deemed invalid as it had not received prior approval from the King (George III) and the Privy Council, as required by the Royal Marriages Act of 1772. Their relationship ended in 1794, when the Prince Regent was coerced into a sanctioned marriage with his cousin, Caroline of Brunswick, both to secure his position for the throne and to settle his enormous debts.
