  • "Chaplin left Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios in 1915 to join the Essanay Company where he made fourteen films. This tape contains three newly-restored films in which Chaplin developed his art by introducing subtle gestures and his signature brand of pathos. 1) The Bank (18 min.): Charlie plays a janitor in love with a beautiful stenographer. When his amorous advances are rebuffed, Charlie dreams up a bank robbery in which he emerges as hero, apprehending the robbers and freeing the girl. As he embraces the object of his affection, the dream ends and he wakes to find himself kissing a mop. 2) Shanghaied (18 min.): Charlie is tricked into service on old tub about to leave port. He does not know that the owners are preparing to dynamite the boat and collect the insurance money. 3) A Night in the show (18 min.): Charlie plays Mr. Pest, a dapper but inebriated gentleman, whose antics at the theatre culminate in a pie-throwing free-for-all."
