Hodges, which begin in 1979, describe work; family events and social gatherings including children's and grandchildren's activities; college and family reunions; leisure activities; hiking portions of the Appalachian Trail; political, social, and economic news; improvements to the home in Essex; and births and deaths of family members. Included in the diaries are newspaper clippings, letters from family members, photographs, and yearly economic outlook and investment review for Hodges' company, Welch & Forbes.
